0809 MC Adaptive Formations - Diploma Project

Adaptive Formations explores the idea of spatial adaptability via rule based design methods. Architectural intent is based on the bottom-up process, defying usual pathway beginning with the masterplan and ending with the individual building design. Proposed design protocol prioritizes decisions at the local level, assesses their compatibility and generates complex spatial forms. In a gradual process, existing warehouses are being converted for multitude of uses revolving around knowledge related industries. Simultaneously, network of public spaces is formed in relation to varied occupancy scenarios with the aim to allow for interaction between permanent occupants and visitors. In the later stages of the project, such development pattern lends it self to further increase of the built density and evolution of high rise buildings on site.

e Taking into the account factors like: proximity of the city center, plausible pedestrian routes and the river front location, it is easy to imagine that now vacant industrial warehouses forming Port of Belgrade could make the new centrality in area. This project aims to recycle industrial fabric by converting it according to various individual needs and collective patterns of behavior. The understanding of the communal aspect is based on the study of rules which could be translated into the design protocol. Any change of the input will result in the transformed output. With the change in use or if certain program is activated, such as exhibition, lecture, or concert; the adjustment in environment will follow. The interior is created from thin and movable partitions suspended form the existing concrete structure. If the number of users changes or certain activity intensifies, built environment will adapt accordingly.

s Uzevši u obzir izuzetno povoljan položaj u odnosu na centarlno gradsko jezgro, saobraćajne i pešačke pravce, kao i direktnu vezu sa rekom, čeona hala beogradske luke ima potencijal stvaranja novog centralnog mesta u životu grada. Projekat se bavi prilagođavanjem bivšeg industrijskog prostora uzimajući u obzir indivudulane potrebe njegovih korisnika ali i kolektivne oblike ponašanja. Razumevanje potreba mase je zasnovano na analitičkim pretpostavkama i nizu pravila čijom kombinacijom je stvoren protokol za genezu prostorne forme. Promenom ulaznih podataka dobijamo promene u konačnoj konfiguraciji prostora. Promenom namene ili aktivacijom potencijalnih sadržaja kao što su izložbe, predavanja, ili koncerti vrši se i adaptacija prostora. Materijalizacija enterijera je definisana površinskim elementima i pokretnim pregradnim panelima koji su sajlama okašeni za posotojeću betonsku konstrukciju. Oscilacije u broju korisnika i intezitetu aktivnisti tako imaju direktan uticaj na stvaranje odgovarjućeg prostornog rešenja.

Rheotomic surface. Electric field line, equipotential surface. Magnets, attractors in public space and fields witch are necessary for that activity in response of number of people. Helicoids witch affect each other enable continual walk through public space, its levels, and floor of neighboring, already existing, ex industrial, office building. Public space consists of picnic zone, open cinema zone, covered cinema zone, open air amphitheater, covered amphitheater, cafe, gathering room, two terraces, observation decks. It uses temperature difference (of river water and air) for micro climate, so it is a public space with long season usage.

e One possible way to activate former industrial building is by inserting new programme into the existing architectural shell. In this case this is done by the gradual formation of the infrastructure for recreational activities. Introduced structures are mimicking naturally created rock suitable for free climbing according to three relevant parameters: degree of inclination, disposition of handles, and ascent trajectories. Taken as input data, these parameters are used to create formal differentiation and offer a degree of diversity to be matched with individual preferences of the users. Finally proposed structures synchronized and distributed in the existing building to help organize space and form a sequence of distinct interiors.

s Predlozenom strategijom aktiviranja Čeone hale stvara se poligon za slobodno penjanje, i srodne sportsko-rekreativne aktivnosti. Predvidjena prostorna struktura oponasa priordni oblik stena pogodnih za penjanjanje prema prostornim parametrima koji su relevantni sa ovaj sport: stepen nagiba, rasporeda hvatova i putanje uspona. Manipulacijom parametara kroz postavljeni protokol ostvarene su mnogostruke varijacije konacne forme. Medjusobnim uskladjivanjem i pozicioniranjem takvih struktura u prostoru hale, organizvan je citav prostor za definisanim podcelinama.

e Proposed strategy for the regeneration is aiming to reconcile former industrial building with its surroundings. Existing structure remains intact while new topography is introduced as a means to establish connection between the interior and the exterior. Initial analysis based on the catalog of suitable uses is converted into manageable data to help control the design process. A sequence of plausible design iterations has been tested with the use of a mechanism for distribution of referential points in relation to fluctuations in the parametric input. Resulting geometry is established as the optimal solution capable of fostering great number of uses.

s Projekat za regeneracju čeone hale Luke Beograd odnosi se na širi kontekst i bavi se povezivanjem grada i objekta. Polazeci od postojecih kvaliteta industrjskog objekta, strategija se oslanja na intervenciju topografskog karaktera kojom se vrsi povezivanje unutrašnjeg prostora hale i spoljnog prosrora neposrednog okruzenja. Inicijalna analizia kroz katalog potencijalnih aktivnosti je pretvorena u parmetre za generisanje prostorne forme, a zatim je uspostavljen mehanizam preko koga je ispitan niz mogucih resenja prema prostornoj dispoziciji referentnih tacaka u odnosu na varijacije u parmaetraskim vrednostima. Konacna geoemtrija je uspostvlajena kao optimalno resenje koje omogucava koegzistenciju velikog broja namena.

e The proposal is an adaptable configuration of column-like components equipped with rolled-in partitions to be expanded for space enclosure according to specific needs of the users, such as artists' spaces or small business' premises. In a way, project is to become a frame, changeable over time and capable of responding to diverse needs. Its transformation is parametric driven and in addition to variation in size and shape of the units, it provides for fluctuations in finishes and ambiance. High degree of customization, will give distinct identity to the space while existing qualities of the industrial warehouse space remain intact. Floor plane is another dominant feature of the project, with embedded infrastructure and intelligence for component distribution and possible partition trajectories according to multiple occupancy scenarios.

s Gradivne jedinice novih prostora unutar Čeone hale su stubovi u kojima se nalaze raznovrsni zavijeni materijali čijim se izvlačenjem prostor predgrađuje i postaje specifičan na onaj način koji je korisnik zamislio i koji mu je potreban da bi se bavio određenom vrstom aktivnosti. Forma projekta je “ram” za te aktivnosti, koje oblikuju različitu sliku svakom promenom parametara. Taj ram, sa svim svojim kapcitetima u varijaciji rasporeda, vrste aktivnosti i ambijenta, dopušta da forma Čeone hale ostane primarna, a da sam prostor dobije oblik aktivnosti koje se u datom trenutku vrše. Tlo je podeljeno na glavne zone koje su predodređene za različite aktivnosti, a na njemu se čitaju i putanje panela do svakog stuba za koji ih je moguće prikačiti.

e The idea was to convert void warehouse space into the display of science and technology related innovations. Proposed organizational scheme is derived form interdependent nature of the two phenomena and has been defined topologically, imposing key definitions of the space rather then is final form. Design proposal is initiated in the form of the info pavilion, assuming that such intervention would trigger the transformation of the entire site into the museum like environment. Over the period of time, pavilion will become not more than an item on display while surrounding space will inherit its characteristics with an echoing effect to result with the geometry of the circulation routes and distinct rooms with audio and visual independence.

s Ideja uredjenja Čeone hale zasnovana je na analizi postojeceg prostora i aktivnosti koje cine muzej. Predvidjeni sadrzaji iz kojih se grana organizaciona shema projekata, podeljeni su u dva fundametalna pojma: nauka i tehnologija. Njihove prostorne karakteristike odredjene su topoloski, pa je prostorni predlog iniciran na nivou paviljona koji onda i sam postaje eksponat u okviru muzeja. Razvojem kroz definisan vremenski period, paviljon postaje info centar dok ostatak prostora preuzima karakteristike paviljona stvarajuci eho efekat kroz citavu Čeonu halu. Tako definisane komponente organizuju postavku izlobe definisuci putanje kretanja i zasebne audio-vizuelne podceline prostora sa jasnim identitetom.
